Hotel de Glace
It takes 15 000 tons
of snow, 500 000 tons of ice, 6 weeks of work and 120 warm hands to build a
stunning ice Hotel de Glace in the outskirts of Quebec City in Canada. Hotel de
Glace is the first ice hotel in the North America and the first in the world to
make a bed and everything else out of ice. For the first time it opened its ice
doors for guests on the New Year’s Day in 2001 and is rebuilt every December
ever since. This year Hotel de Glace is celebrating its 11th anniversary, which
means there will be a very special program of activities!
|
Hotel de Glace has only four month lifespan
(operating from the first week in January to the last week in March and being
brought down in April every year). However, it attracts around 45 000 tourists
every year!
To accomodate the increasing straem of
tourists the number of beds have increased from 22 in the 2001 to 85 in 2010.
All beds in the hotel are made of solid ice base, with a wooden bedspring lined
with deer furs. Since the
average temperature in the hotel is about -3°C to -5°C, people have to sleep inside arctic sleeping bags designed
to stay warm in temperatures as low as -30°C.
Hotel de Glace also
offers to its visitors an amazing exhibition of ice sculptures with artic
animals such as penguins, walrus and a white wolf carefully carved in ice.
Apart from wonderful
architecture and exhibition hotel also features such amenities as a nightclub,
movie theater, an Ice Cafe and even outdoor hot tubs.
And if that is not enough - there is also a chapel
where you can celebrate your dream wedding!
An added bonus of staying at the Hotel de
Glace is the wonderful and numerous activities located adjacent to the hotel.
The Station Touristique
Duchesnay offers outdoor ice-skating, dogsledding,
cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.
Enter this magical universe and live an incredible
experience by visiting this ephemeral work of art from January 6th until March
25th, 2012.
